'Travelling on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway', 1831. Top: 1st class carriages drawn by the locomotive 'Jupiter'. Bottom: 2nd and 3rd class carriages drawn by the locomotive 'North Star'. The world's first passenger railway, the Liverpool and Manchester opened on 15 September 1830. Its principal engineer was George Stephenson (1781-1848).
