Selling a wife to the highest bidder, 1816. This practice was illegal, but was known to have been done in Sheffield in 1803, Brighton in 1808 and forms the basis of an incident in Thomas Hardy's novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. Hand-coloured engraving from Popular Passtimes. (London, 1816).
