'The Death of Nelson', 1805, (1859-1864). The death of Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1804) at the Battle of Trafalgar. From the collection of the National Museums, Liverpool. Scene on 'HMS Victory' during the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, where the British navy decisively defeated the Franco-Spanish fleet. One of Britain's greatest military figures, Nelson was the victor at a number of naval battles in the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of the Nile (1798), Copenhagen (1801) and most famously, Trafalgar where he was fatally wounded by a shot from a French sharpshooter.
