Allegory of the Republican France, 1871. Cartoon from a series titled La Grande Crucifiee!!! depicting Marianne as Republican France sitting on the tomb of Paris. The city surrendered to the besieging Prussians in January 1871 before being wracked by the upheavals of the Paris Commune in March-May of the same year. From a private collection.
