Wilhelm I of Prussia was proclaimed the first Emperor of a united Germany in a ceremony in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles on 18 January 1871. Ten days later, Germany's victory in the Franco-Prussian War was effectively complete when the besieged city of Paris surrendered. From a private collection.
