'Le Plan Trochu', 1870-1871. A kneeling General Jules Trochu, who served as President of France from September 1870 to January 1871, offers the keys of Paris to Wilhelm I of Prussia. After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870. Under the command of Trochu, the city held out despite famine and great hardship until 28 January 1871, by which time capitulation had become inevitable. Cartoon from Actualites.
