Galileo Galilei, Italian astronomer and mathematician, early 17th century. One of the greatest scientists of all time, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) discovered Jupiter's moons and the laws governing falling bodies. Portrait from the frontispiece of his Istoria (1613) and Il Saggiatore (1623). A cherub, left, holds Galileo's military compass, while another (right) holds a telescope.
