Johann Joachim Winckelmann, German archaeologist. A prominent authority on ancient art, Winckelmann (1717-1768) is particularly known for his work on treasures discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii, the Roman towns buried by the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, as well as the temples of Paestum.
