Heinrich Schliemann's excavations at Myceneae, 1877. An artist sketching in front of the Lion gateway at Myceneae 1877. The city of Mycenae in the Peloponnese was reputed to be the capital of the legendary king Agamemnon. It was excavated in the 1870s by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann.
