James Jeans, English mathematician and physicist. Jeans (1877-1946) held the chair of applied mathematics at Princeton University (1905-1909), lectured at both Oxford and Cambridge, and was engaged in research in astrophysics and cosmogony. In 1929 he turned to writing, producing a number of popular books on astrophysics and cosmology.
