'The Story of Theseus', mid-15th century. Theseus lands on Crete from Athens and sets out to kill the Minotaur, the bull-headed monster which King Minos has had imprisoned in the labyrinth built by Daedalus for the purpose. Ariadne, daughter of Minos, gives Theseus a ball of thread to mark his way through the labyrinth so that he can find his way back. After killing the beast Theseus returns to Ariadne and they elope (centre). Form the Campana Collection, Rome.
