'Alexandre Lenoir', 1799. Originally an artist, Lenoir was actively involved in conserving France's heritage from the ravages of the Revolution, founding the Musee des Monuments Francais (Museum of French Monuments) in 1795. In this portrait he is shown carrying an urn containing the remains of Moliere.
