'The Virgin and Child with Two Angels', 1472-1475. Also called 'The Virgin of the Pomegranate'. The infant Christ holds a pomegranate, the symbol of his Passion. The Virgin is portrayed in the traditional blue robe and to her right by the angels are a spray of Madonna lily (Lilium candidum), symbol of purity, and a bowl of roses with leaves and thorns, a portent of the sorrows that will follow the present joy in her life.
