William McKinley, 25th President of the United States, 1896. McKinley (1843-1901) on the front porch of his house in Canton, Ohio, receiving congratulations on his election. McKinley, born in Niles, Ohio, became a lawyer and in 1877 entered Congress as a Republican, becoming a leading tarriff expert. He was elected President in 1896 and for a second term four years later. McKinley was shot by an anarchist, Leon Czolgosz, at the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo, 6 September 1901 and died on 14 September. From The Sphere, London, 14 September 1901.
