'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear', 1889. Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) painted this self-portrait after a quarrel with fellow artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) at Arles during which he threatened Gauguin with a razor. In remorse, he cut off part of his own ear. From the collection of the Courtauld Institute, London.
