Death of Buddha, c483 BC, (17th century). Buddha (The Enlightened One), the founder of Buddhism, was born Prince Gautama Siddhartha (c563-c483 BC), son of a rajah in Nepal. At the age of about 30 he renounced all earthly ambitions at adopted a life of an ascetic. Illustration from a Japanese scroll in the collection of the British Museum, London.
