John Andre, British soldier, late 18th century. Andre (1751-1780) served in America as aide-de-camp to General Grey and Sir Henry Clinton. Entrusted to negotiate with Benedict Arnold for the betrayal of West Point, he was captured by the Americans and hanged as a spy. Copperplate engraving from Raymond's History of England.
