Lion passant from wall of the sacred way to the Ishtar Gate, Babylon (in modern Iraq), c575 BC. The lion was the cult animal of Ishtar, great goddess of the Sumero-Akkadian pantheon. The walls of the Ishtar Gate were faced with relief in glazed brick.
