Richard Francis Burton,1882. Burton (1821-1890) in the eastern dress he adopted on his travels. The figures on the right represent Murray and Baedeker guide books. Burton's extensive travels included a journey to Mecca, disguised as a Pathan, and an expedition to locate the source of the Nile, with John Hanning Speke. He also translated the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra into English. He was knighted in 1886. Cartoon from the Fancy Portraits series of cartoons in Punch. (London, 13 May 1882).
