St Francis of Assisi portrayed in a monk's habit, tonsured, and with a golden halo, kneeling as he receives the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, from a vision of a winged Christ. At the bottom of the picture are scenes from the saint's life. A native of Perugia, Francis (1181-1226) founded the Franciscan order. From the Musee du Louvre, Paris.
