'Leonidas at Thermopylae', 5th century BC, (c1814). Leonidas (died c480 BC) was king of Sparta from 491 BC. He held the pass at Thermopylae for 3 days with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians against the Persians. All the Spartans were found dead.
