Valentinian II or Gratian, 4th century Roman Emperors. Head of a statue of Valentinian (371-392) or his half-brother Gratian (359-383). Valentinian was made co-emperor with Gratian in 375 when only 4 years of age (Gratian was 17 at the time). Although Gratian had been chosen by their father, Valentinian I, to succeed him, the army favoured Valentinian. Both were murdered, Gratian by the rebel general Magnus Maximus in 383, and Valentinian in 392, probably by order of his Frankish general, Arbogast, with whom he had quarrelled.
