Scenes from the life of St Jerome, from the Bible of Charles the Bald, 9th century. Top: Jerome (c342-420) leaves Rome for Jerusalem to take Hebrew lessons; centre: in discussion with Paul (1st century) and Eustogine, behind him St Luke (1st century) and two scribes; bottom: he distributes copies of his translation of the Bible into Latin, the Vulgate, to monks who take them to their monasteries. Charles the Bald (823-877) was king of the Western Franks from 843-877 and Holy Roman Emperor from 875.
