St George, mounted on a spotted horse, killing the dragon, 19th century. St George was a half legendary Christian soldier from Cappadocia, supposedly martyred in c303 during the persecution of the Christians under the Emperor Diocletian (245-313). On the First Crusade (1096-1099), the English adopted him as their patron saint.
