St Augustine of Hippo, 1460. St Augustine of Hippo (354-430) is regarded as one of the great fathers of the early Christian church. Born in Numidia (modern Tunisia), he was converted to Christianity in 386, and became Bishop of Hippo, in North Africa, in 396.
