Alexander II, Tsar of Russia, reviewing troops, c1855. Alexander (1818-1881) became Tsar in 1855 at the height of the Crimean War. Known as 'The Liberator' for his emancipation of the serfs in 1861, he was assassinated in St Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of a revolutionary group known as People's Will.
