The dispute of Thomas a Becket and Henry II, 1170 (c1180). Thomas a Becket (1118-1170), Archbishop of Canterbury, in dispute with Henry II (1133-1189) King of England from 1154. The king is overheard by four knights who take his supposed remark Who will rid me of this turbulent priest? to be his true wish and murder Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. This manuscript is the earliest known representation of the incident.
