Henry of Lorraine, 3rd Duc de Guise, 16th century French soldier and statesman, mid 19th century. Henry of Lorraine (1550-1588) was one of the instigators of the St Bartholemew's Day Massacre, which began on 24 August 1572 and resulted in the murder of tens of thousands of French Protestants (Huguenots) by Catholic mobs. He was assassinated by order of Henry III on 23 December 1588. From History of the Acts and Monuments of the Church by John Foxe. Popularly called Foxe's Book of Martyrs this book, originally published in 1563, went through many, many editions, including the mid-19th century one from which this illustration is taken.
