John and Charles Wesley preaching in the open air at Bristol, 1739 (1868). John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788) were the founders of Methodism. The movement gained its name from its emphasis on methodical study and devotion. It was at Bristol that the first Methodist chapel was founded. From The Sunday Magazine. (London, 1868).
