Charles Martel, King of the Franks, at the Battle of Poitiers, 732 (1892). Charles Martel (the Hammer) (c688-741) depicted wielding a battleaxe. Founder of the Carolingian dynasty and grandfather of Charlemagne, he defeated the Moors at the Battle of Poitiers in 732, turning back their expansion north of the Pyrenees.
