Trial of Emile Zola, French author, 1898. Zola (1840-1902) embracing his counsel, Maitre Labori at the end of the 14th day of his trial for defamation of the French military authorities for writing a letter to the press referring to the Esterhazy court martial in his effort to obtain justice for Alfred Dreyfus c1859-1935). Dreyfus, a French army officer of Jewish extraction had been wrongly convicted of treason for supplying documents to the Germans and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island.
