Girolamo Frascatoro, Italian physician, poet and astronomer, late 16th century. Frascatoro (c1478-1553) put forward the theory that diseases were caused by seedlike entities (germs in effect) that could transmit infection over distance. He is best remembered for work in rhyme describing syphilis, Syphilis sive morbus Gallicus (Syphilis or the French Disease), published in 1530.
