Entrance to the Acropolis, Athens, 5th century BC. Known as the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis was designed by the architect Mnesikles under the direction of Pericles. It was begun in 437 BC, and eventually completed between 421 and 415 BC after work was stopped in 431 BC when the Peloponnesian War broke out.
