Parthenon on the Acropolis, Athens, 5th century BC. The great temple of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, begun in c445 BC. It was built at the initiative of Pericles, under the supervision of Phidias, and housed the colossal lost statue of Athena by Phidias.
