Death of Henri, Vicomte de Turenne, French soldier, 1675 (c1870). Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne Turenne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611-1675) established his reputation as a military commander in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), and was made a Marshal of France in 1644, and Marshal-General of France in 1668. He was killed by a cannon ball which struck him in the stomach while reconnoitring at Sasbach, Germany. The same ball shot away the arm of Turenne's companion St Hilaire.
