Caroline Chisholm, The Emigrant's Friend', Sydney, Australia, c1845. Caroline Chisholm (nee Jones) (1808-1877), was born at Wotton, Northamptonshire, but moved with her husband, Archibald Chisholm to India, and later to Australia. She worked tirelessly to improve the lot of homeless women and girls of the colony of New South Wales as well as assisting immigrants on their arrival at their new home. Mrs Chisholm also worked with the government to improve the conditions on board the ships which carried emigrants from Britain to Australia. Here she is shown meeting newly arrived immigrants on the wharves at Sydney.
