Coal mining accident, Courrieres Mines, Pas-de-Calais, France, 1906. Anxious friends and relatives wait at the pit-head while bodies of the victims who died when the roof fell in are brought to the surface. A few men survived for 24 days underground by eating carrots and oats they found in the pit pony stables. From Le Petit Journal. (Paris, March 1906).
