The Atlantic Telegraph, c1878. Idealised view of the telegraph cable passing under the ocean from Valentia, Ireland to Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. The cable was successfully laid by Brunel's steamship the 'Great Eastern' in 1866. A cable previously laid in 1858 failed after 3 weeks operation because of the voltage being incorrect.
