Johannes Hevelius, German astronomer, 1647. Known now by the latinized form of his name - Jan Hewel or Hewelcke - Hevelius (1611-1687) spent as much time as he could spare from his brewing business observing the night sky from the roof of his house. Here he is shown observing through a refracting telescope on a stand fitted with a quadrant and plumb-bob so the altitude of the object observed could be noted. From Selenographia by Johannes Hevelius. (Gdansk, 1647).
