Execution of Thomas Cranmer, Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury, Oxford, 1556 (mid 19th century). Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI, fell victim to the desire of Edward's successor, Mary I, to return England to Catholicism. Cranmer was removed from his office, arrested, tried and convicted of charges of heresy and treason and burnt at the stake.
