Lazzaro Spallanzani, 18th century Italian naturalist and biologist, 1874. Spallanzani (1729-1799) watching an eruption of Etna, Sicily. Among his discoveries was that microbes came from the air and could be killed by boiling, paving the way for the later work of Louis Pasteur.
