Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, 18th century French chemist, investigating respiration. Regarded as the founder of the modern science of chemistry, Lavoisier (1743-1794) discovered oxygen, the interchange of gases in the lungs, and proved that carbon dioxide and water are the normal products of breathing.
