Carolus Linnaeus, Swedish naturalist, 1732 (early 19th century). Linnaeus (Carl von Linne) (1707-1778), the founder of the modern system of plant and animal nomenclature, aged 25 in Lapland dress, holding a sprig of Linnea borealis (Twinflower), a creeping evergreen shrub named in his honour.
