'Plymouth Breakwater from the West', 1829. Built by the Scottish civil engineer John Rennie (1761-1821), work was begun in 1812 and completed in 1841. Here blocks of stone, that have been unloaded from specially designed vessels using a crane, are being manoeuvred into position on rollers. Illustration from Devonshire Illustrated, 1829.
