Galileo's drawing of lunar craters, 1611, (c1655). Galileo Galilei (1554-1642), Italian mathematician, astronomer and physicist made the first effective working telescope in 1609. He described his telescopic obserations of the Moon in a letter to the Swiss Jesuit astronomer, Christopher Grienberger (1564-1636).
