Luigi Galvani, 18th century Italian physiologist, [1880]. Galvani (1737-1798) discovered animal electricity (voltaic or galvanic electricity) when investigating the contraction of muscles in the legs of dead frogs as shown in this illustration. The term 'galvanise' - to shock or excite into action, takes its name from him. From Le Journal de la Jeunesse. (Paris, 1880).
