John Ross, British polar explorer and naval officer, 19th century. In 1818 Ross (1800-1862) led an expedition to search for the Northwest Passage. He accompanied William Parry (1790-1855) on Arctic expeditions in 1819-1827, led an Arctic expedition in 1829-1833, an Antarctic expedition in 1839-1843, and commanded the expedition to search for the missing party of John Franklin which set out in 1850.
