Henry Bessemer, British engineer and inventor, 19th century. Bessemer (1813-1898) was a prolific inventor, but is best known for the invention of a method of converting pig iron into steel (the Bessemer process) which made the cheap production of steel in bulk possible for the first time. Obverse of a commemorative medal.
