Antoine Laurent Lavoisier, 18th century French chemist, 1801. Among other achievements, Lavoisier (1743-1794) was one of the discoverers of oxygen, and established the laws of chemical combination. He improved the manufacture of gunpowder when director of government powder mills. He was guillotined during the French Revolution. From The Temple of Flora by Robert John Thornton. (London, 1801).
