Mendelian inheritance of colour of flower in the culinary pea, 1912. Pink-flowered race (left), white-flowered race (right), and a cross between the two (centre). The Austrian monk Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) read his paper on 'Plant Hybridisation' in 1865, but it went unnoticed for 34 years.
